    Abram Shtern - violin

Montecito International Music Festival 2008 honoree

Abram Shtern, a native of Kiev, Ukraine, studied violin with David Berthier, a pupil of the legendary Leopold Auer. From Berthier, Shtern acquired the finest traditions of the Auer school of violin playing. After graduating from the Kiev State Conservatory, Shtern was given the honored position of assistant to Berthier, later achieving a professorship there. Many of his students currently hold positions in major orchestras, and several of his pupils have won prizes in internatinal competetions. He held the position of Concertmaster of the Shevchenko Opera and Ballet Orchestra from 1947-1989, immigrating with his family to the United States, in 1990. During his 42 year tenure with the Shevchenko, Shtern also appeared frequently as soloist and chamber musician. He has held Master classes in Germany, Holland, Israel, Italy, the United States, Yugoslavia, and the former Soviet Union. As an American citizen he has continued to teach, give Master classes and perform.
